David Sheff (Steve Carell) loves his son Nic (Timothée Chalamat) more than anything in the world. All through Nic’s life, he’s done all he can to give him the best start. But despite David’s best efforts, Nic’s life doesn’t go to plan.
Nic is addicted to meth. He spends his life cycling in and out of rehab, sober and high, always battling the addiction that rages within him. On the outskirts is his father, forcing him into conversations he’s not ready to have, and with too high expectations of what his life should be.
Beautiful Boy is based on the best-selling memoir of David Sheff, who told the story of his son’s addiction and the battles they both faced attempting to defeat it. Named the best memoir of the year following its release, Nic also wrote his side of the story, entitled “Tweak”.
Beautiful Boy stars Steve Carell (Foxcatcher, The Big Short) as David, a big-hearted and desperate father who will go to any lengths to bring his son back from the brink. Timothée Chalamat (Call Me By Your Name) plays Nic, the son who can’t seem to find the strength to put his demons behind him once and for all.
The film is directed by Felix Van Groeningen (The Broken Circle Breakdown), and is his English-language debut, and is already hotly tipped for award season recognition.
