Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms (15)

In Maquia’s home, nobody ages past adolescence. While people may grow and mature, the clan all remain as teenagers forever. Maquia is no different, living in an adolescent body, never having to worry about aging or death.
Despite the peace and tranquillity that the clan enjoy, Maquia is lonely. She has no parents, and few close friends, leaving her wondering what alternative path may be waiting just outside of her home. An endless life lays before her, bringing into question the benefits of living forever.
When an army hellbent on discovering the clan’s secret to immortality invades the land, all thoughts of peace evaporate. After Maquia’s friend, Leilia, is taken by the army, and her crush disappears, she only has one thought in her mind: to escape a similar fate.
Maquia soon finds herself in a forest, homeless and alone, until she stumbles across a baby boy named Erial, who is also lost. The two only have one another, but as Erial grows and ages, can a girl stuck in a teenager’s body grow with him? And how will Maquia cope with Erial’s mortal life, when she herself cannot age?
Maquia is the first full-feature anime by Mari Okada, following her prolific work across television and screenplays for films such as The Anthem of the Heart and My Teacher. Final Fantasy character designer Akihiko Yoshida provides the original character design, with a score by Kenji Kawai (Ghost in the Shell).
In Japanese with English subtitles.
